2 · THURSDAY, AUGUST 3, 2017 Farm show offers something for everyone SUBMITTED PHOTOS by MATT GRUBBA Trib Total Media The Butler Farm Show’s tradition of showing the area’s best in livestock, farm goods and crafts makes it a week worth marking on your calendar. The 69th edition of the an-nual show will be Aug. 7-12 on the grounds beside the Butler Farm Show Airport in Meridian. The show is open from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day, so there’s plenty of time to take in what the many vendors, crafters and local farmers have to offer. Of course, the show’s big-ticket items are the livestock. More than 1,200 rabbits, goats, pigs, cows and more were registered for the show as of mid-July, and the annual 4-H/ FFA Livestock Sale at 6 p.m. Thursday night once again is expected to draw top dollar. “Last year, the grand cham-pion cow sold for $21,000, and the total amount of livestock sold was $214,000,” Butler Farm Show market-ing director Jim Lokhaiser said. “I call it the Super Bowl for the 4-H and FFA kids. They work all year to get a rib-bon and sell their animal for money. “People don’t understand the work these kids have to put in. They can’t just walk up with an animal. They’re taking care of these animals all year, they have to have their papers signed off and get checked by the veterinar-ian before the show.” Lokhaiser said the prices fetched at the livestock sale have boomed in recent years because of the involve-ment of local corporations bidding up the top animals. That only benefits the young people raising the animals, who come from all parts of Butler County. “We get them from all the way up in Moniteau and down to Saxonburg — Knoch High School area,” Lokhaiser said. “I couldn’t give you a number off my head of how many, but they’re Butler County kids who are earning the money.” In addition to the livestock, com-petition in the arts and crafts will have local artists seeking out a blue ribbon.
