THURSDAY, AUGUST 3, 2017 · 5 New amusement rides company returns after successful first year by MATT GRUBBA Trib Total Media While many come to the Butler Farm Show for food, shows or farm products, for the younger patrons, it’s the rides that make the last-ing memories. Whether it’s the bright lights and view from atop the Ferris wheel or the thrill of spinning and dipping on any number of carnival rides, there’s no question the rides are a favorite for many children. And as always, the $8 cost of admission to the Butler Farm Show includes the cost of the rides — there are no separate costs or ride tickets to purchase. Those who attended the fair last year might have noticed a change in some of the rides and an increase in selection. That change was because the Butler Farm Show, for the first time, teamed up with Win-tersville, Ohio-based Bates Bros. Amusement Company to provide and operate the rides for the week of the show. The change turned out to be a hit with both show-goers and management, and those same Bates Bros. rides will be back at the fair Aug. 7-12. “What convinced us to go with them is their equipment is very solid, and the way they operate the rides very professional,” Butler Farm Show marketing director Jim Lokhaiser said. “They do such a good job, and their rides are safe and well-maintained. That makes the rides one less concern for the board of directors, who have a lot to take care of during the show.” Lokhaiser said he and the board received positive feedback on the switch last year to Bates Bros. service, and those comments were heard loud and clear. “When people stopped at the office on the way out and said how much they appreciated the rides, that makes us feel good, especially when it’s people with smaller kids,” Lokhaiser said. Bates Bros. is a family-owned and operated company that first opened in 1965. They operate rides and concessions at events in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Their services are highly sought — during August, they also will operate rides at the Warren and Crawford County Fairs, as well as two each in Ohio and New York — and they repair and maintain all their own equipment in-house at their Ohio shop.
